چکیده

The paper discusses the problems associated with environmental modelling and the need to consider uncertainty in the formulation, identification, estimation and validation of environmental models. It introduces the concept of Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling and contrasts its inductive approach with the hypotheticodeductive approaches that dominate most environmental modelling research at the present time. The major methodological procedures utilized in DBM modelling are outlined and two practical examples illustrate how it has been applied in a hydrological and water quality context. Keynote paper presented at the International Federation on Automatic Control (IFAC) Workshop on Environmental Systems, Tokyo, Japan, August 21st, 2001.

The data-based mechanistic approach to the modelling, forecasting and control of environmental systems

The paper presents a unified approach to the modelling, forecasting and control of natural and man-made environmental systems. The modelling approach exploits the author’s Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling philosophy, combined with powerful methods of recursive statistical estimation. These provide the basis for two major stages of model building: first, the critical evaluation of the over...

Modelling bryophytes distribution pattern using environmental parameters of Iran in Geographical Information Systems (GIS): a case study of three genera Tortula, Grimmia and Bryum (Bryophyta)

In the present study, a modelling approach based on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) analysis is presented with the aim of identifying the influence of environmental parameters on three genera, namely, Tortula, Grimmia and Bryum as representatives of Iranian bryoflora. By using ArcGIS Desktop, we produced a model for environmental variables include altitude, precipitation, temperature and...

Data-Based Mechanistic and Top-Down Modelling

The paper discusses the problems associated with environmental modelling and the need to develop simple, ‘top-down’, stochastic models that match the information content of the data. It introduces the concept of Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling and contrasts its inductive approach with the hypotheticodeductive approaches that dominate most environmental modelling research at the present t...

Modeling of Pressure Dependence of Interfacial Tension Behaviors of Supercritical CO2 + Crude Oil Systems Using a Basic Parachor Expression

Parachor based expressions (basic and mechanistic) are often used to model the experimentally observed pressure dependence of interfacial tension (IFT) behaviors of complex supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) and crude oil mixtures at elevated temperatures. However, such modeling requires various input data (e.g. compositions and densities of the equilibrium liquid and vapor phases, and molec...
